A Day On Set With Georges Antoni
How Did Georges Antoni First Influence Me?
If you are like me then you surround yourself with inspiration on the walls of your home. An inspiration wall is incredibly motivating and is generally a collection of many different artists you admire. I reiterate these images are not to compare yourself to, they are there to excite your internal sub-conscious and stimulate your own aesthetic, remember that!
My inspiration wall grew and grew until it took over each wall in my house and it wasn’t until I took the time to study who took these amazing photographs that I was blown away to find that combined I would have had a wall purely photographed by Georges Antoni!
The man is an Australian Fashion Photography Legend to say the least! And researching his story to success only accentuates the truth of never giving up on your dreams of success.
So How Did Georges Antoni Get Into Fashion Photography?
Georges stumbled into photography after he lost it all once his chain of health stores failed. With credit-card debt and $200 in his pocket the only opportunity he could see was a camera he had, a few ‘average’ photos he had taken and the courage to tell a modeling agency he was a photographer looking for work. His drive for success paid off as these days Georges is an internationally in demand fashion photographer and has extraordinary technical skills to boast about, both in camera and post production.
What Is Georges Antoni Really Like?
I’d say it is that moment of rock bottom that has made Georges who he is today. Upon meeting him you get the most amazing vibe from him. He is positive, he genuinely cares and with how successful he is, he is so humble and down to earth and trust me…. all who have met him speak this of him – I’m not just saying that because I am a fan!!
A Day On Set With Famous Fashion Photographer – Georges Antoni
Shoot day was on a cold early morning in July well before dawn, the air was crisp… you know the frosty breathe type of air. Everyone on set was cool, calm and collective… well everyone but myself. Although cool, calm and collective I was bursting with excitement and it didn’t take long for Georges and his first assistant to figure this out and have a giggle about. I had so many predictions of my day with the big leagues and all expectations were exceeded!
Georges took the time to give me some insider tips and explained why he was using certain equipment rather than others. Listening to him I discovered his photography skills are only exceeded by his understanding of how to capture the designer’s garments in the most captivating way.
It’s a rather exciting day when you know you are going to be assisting one of your ‘hero’ photographers… Georges Antoni.
What I loved most about the day was something I was beginning to doubt about myself. I have assisted several upcoming fashion photographers since graduating and none of them do many things we were taught at college, the biggest is never using a light metre. From my time with others I was feeling as though I was over analyzing my shoots, I had been thinking to myself maybe I should just go with the flow like most photographers do however within an hour of being on set with Georges I quickly understood why his images are some of the most technically correct I have come across.
Georges has built an amazing team around him, it is no wonder we finished ahead of schedule with some incredible images for a fabulous international Australian designer – marvellous to say the least! Ha!
Using predominately natural light with large scrims and a small amount of fill, Aido (George’s number one assistant) assured me I really should see them in the studio, ‘It is an organized chaos’ he said. I hope one day I can see this for myself – I am sure I would find it just as captivating!
